If you are moving to GTM Kit from another Google Tag Manager plugin, you do not have to copy your configuration by hand. GTM Kit reads the other plugin’s settings and copies across everything it has an equivalent for, so you can switch in a couple of minutes and keep the setup you already had.
Where to find it
Go to GTM Kit → Tools → Import settings.
The import is also offered during the setup wizard, and if GTM Kit has warned you that a second Google Tag Manager plugin is active, that warning links straight to it.
The section only lists plugins whose settings are actually present on your site. If you see nothing there, GTM Kit did not find another plugin’s configuration to read.

Steps
- Select the plugin you want to import from and choose Continue.
- GTM Kit shows you exactly which of your settings will be replaced, before anything is written.
- Choose Import and save to apply them, or Cancel to back out.
If your current settings already match the other plugin, GTM Kit tells you so and there is nothing to import.
What gets imported
This depends on the plugin you are importing from, and on which of its settings you had configured. GTM Kit only copies settings the other plugin actually set: anything it left alone is left alone here too.
From GTM4WP, the most complete of the five, GTM Kit imports:
- Your container ID, and the container environment if you use one (authentication token and preview ID)
- Your server-side tagging domain
- The data layer variable name
- The post and user fields you had switched on for the data layer, such as post type, categories, tags, title, author, date, ID, logged-in state, user ID and user role
- Your Google Consent Mode default settings, all signals
- Login and sign-up event tracking
- User roles excluded from tracking
- For WooCommerce: ecommerce tracking, brand taxonomy, using the SKU as the product ID, Google business vertical, the product ID prefix, whether tax and shipping are excluded from values, and customer data
- Contact Form 7 integration
Before you import
It replaces, and it cannot be undone. The confirmation screen lists every setting that will change. Read it. If you have already configured GTM Kit and only want part of the other plugin’s setup, copy those settings across by hand instead.
GTM Kit uses one container. If the other plugin was configured with several, the first is imported and the screen tells you how many were skipped. Set up the rest yourself if you need them.
Nothing inside Google Tag Manager changes. This imports the settings stored in WordPress. Your tags, triggers and variables live in your GTM container and are untouched, which also means they keep working exactly as before. Deactivate the other plugin once you are done. Running two Google Tag Manager plugins at the same time loads your container twice and doubles your events. Import first, check the result, then deactivate.
After importing
- Check that the container ID on GTM Kit → Setup is the one you expect.
- Check Consent & privacy if you use Google Consent Mode, since the defaults came across from the other plugin.
- Deactivate the plugin you imported from.
- Open Tools → Site Health (or WordPress’s own Site Health screen) and confirm GTM Kit reports your container as present and loading.
